Kalamazoo, MI — Bobby J. Hopewell, Kalamazoo’s longest serving mayor, has announced he is endorsing Mayor David Anderson’s re-election campaign.

“I am honored to endorse the reelection of my good friend and former colleague Mayor David Anderson,” said Hopewell, who served as Kalamazoo’s mayor from 2007 to 2019. “David loves Kalamazoo and works tirelessly to build our community together. He continues to lead on affordable housing, public safety, economic and neighborhood development.”

“We need David's leadership now more than ever,” Hopewell added. “I ask you to support Mayor David Anderson to continue the work for our city.”

In the past two years as mayor, Anderson has guided the city through the COVID-19 pandemic, worked to secure more than $1.2 million in grants for small businesses, helped fund new affordable housing in the city, and worked with new public safety leadership to make sure the city’s police are improving equity.

“I am honored to have Mayor Hopewell’s endorsement,” Anderson said. “During our 14 years on the commission, Bobby and I have worked together to build our community together.”

Hopewell joins other community leaders, elected officials and Kalamazoo residents in supporting Anderson’s campaign.

“I stood with other city leaders in Bronson Park when David announced his reelection and I will continue to stand with him as he continues to lead,” Hopewell said.

Born and raised in the Kalamazoo area, David Anderson held leadership positions with neighborhood, civic and public school parent-teacher associations before his first election to the Kalamazoo City Commission in 2005 and election to Mayor in 2019. Anderson lives in the Stuart Neighborhood with his wife, Cori Terry.
